Games and Listening Activities
Three tools turn the lesson note into a mini activity: Memory Match (flip card matching game), Note Reading Game (identify notes on a staff), and What Do You Hear (listen and choose the correct answer). Memory Match and
Memory Match
Memory Match is a flip-card matching game. Cards start face-down; the student turns two over at a time, looking for pairs. Matching pairs stay revealed; non-matching pairs flip back. The game is complete when all pairs are matched.
Setting up — Choose a category from the library (categories are managed by Octavia and cover music theory topics like note names, symbols, and terminology). Then choose 4, 6, or 8 pairs — 8 pairs means 16 cards total. You can optionally show text labels on the face of each card. Once you've configured the game, click Save, then Let's Play! to generate and shuffle the board.
During the game — The student clicks (or taps) each card to flip it. Sound effects play on flip, on a match, and on completion. There's a mute button in the header if you need silence. When all pairs are matched, a celebration overlay fires.
Playing again — After completing a round, click Play Again to shuffle a new board with the same settings, or Settings to go back and change the category or card count.
Note Reading Game
The Note Reading Game shows a music note on a staff and asks the student to identify it. It's a quick-fire game — the student answers and moves to the next note immediately.
How it works — A note appears on the staff. The student types the note name using the A–G keys on the keyboard, or taps the on-screen buttons. Correct answers accumulate; incorrect answers can be retried. The game runs entirely in the browser with no library data to configure.
On a phone — The layout automatically adapts for small screens. On desktop, the game uses a compact layout optimised for the note area; on a phone it expands to fill the screen more comfortably.
No saving required — The Note Reading Game has no database record. You can insert it, use it during the lesson, and remove it afterward without any save step. Because it doesn't persist state, it doesn't show progress to families in the Hub — it's a live-lesson activity.
What Do You Hear?
What Do You Hear? is an aural listening game. A short audio clip plays and the student chooses the correct answer from up to four options. The content is drawn from your school's aural library.
Setting up — Choose a mode (Practice or Quiz), an overall category, a category within that, and which specific names to include. If you leave all names selected, all items in that scope are used. Choose how many questions — 5, 10, or all available.
In Practice mode, the student sees whether each answer was right or wrong immediately after picking. A "Next" button advances to the following question. An image may appear alongside the correct answer when one is available in the library.
In Quiz mode, answers are hidden until all questions are answered. The student works through the full set, then sees their final score. Achieving a perfect score in Quiz mode triggers confetti, a celebration sound, and a sticker prompt.
Replay controls — After a round ends, the student can choose to try again with the same settings or go back to change the configuration before starting a new game.
Save before playing — The tool must be saved before the Start button activates. Saving associates the game instance with the lesson note, which is necessary for recording sticker awards.
