Developing great practice habits

The biggest challenge in music teaching isn't what happens in the lesson — it's what happens in between.

Octavia's engagement features support your students to develop good practice habits. Practice tracking, achievement badges, a school leaderboard, and Practiceathons all work together inside the Family Hub.

Practice Tracking

Students can log their practice — no setup required

They just open the Hub and start logging. That's it.

Students log their entire practice routine directly in the Family Hub. They don't need to wait for a teacher to configure anything — they just open the Hub, record what they practised, and it's logged.

Sessions can be timed using a built-in timer, or entered manually. The log builds up over time, giving students and parents a clear, cumulative picture of their practice history.

Parents can also log practice on behalf of a younger student when needed. No extra apps. No separate sign-ins.

Achievements

Badges that reward real practice habits

As students log practice, they automatically earn achievement badges. No extra steps required from anyone.

Badges are awarded for things like completing a first session, building streaks, practising 5 days out of 7, completing longer sessions, and reaching cumulative time milestones like 100, 500, and 1,000 minutes.

When a new badge is earned, a small celebration appears in the Hub. Achievements accumulate over time, giving students something to work towards beyond just the next lesson.

Because achievements are calculated automatically from logged practice, there's nothing to configure. They just appear.

Leaderboards

A leaderboard that rewards more than just total hours

Different students get to shine for different kinds of effort.

The school leaderboard shows students how their practice compares to others at your school. But rather than just ranking by total hours, there are multiple modes — so the student who practises every single day, or who made the biggest improvement this week, can top the board too.

School practice leaderboard in the Octavia Family Hub

Privacy is built in from the start. Students appear using first name and last initial only, and no student appears on the leaderboard unless they've individually opted in through the Hub settings. They can opt out again at any time.

What families need to do

Let your families know the leaderboard is available, and encourage students who'd like to take part to opt in through the Hub settings. Students who haven't opted in can still view the leaderboard — they just won't appear on it.

And if you'd prefer not to offer the leaderboard at all, you can disable it for your school in the school settings.

Practiceathons

Turn practice into a school-wide event

A Practiceathon is a structured practice campaign where your whole school practises toward a shared goal.

You set up a campaign with a date range and a goal. Students enrol and log their practice time through the Family Hub. A public school page tracks cumulative progress and shows a campaign leaderboard, making it a genuinely motivating event for the whole studio.

Practiceathons work well in the lead-up to concerts or recitals, as a term-break challenge, or simply to inject some friendly energy and competition into the school year.

Practiceathons can also raise funds for your school

If you'd like to add a fundraising dimension to your Practiceathon, you can. Supporters can make pledges, such as "$2 per minute practised", or donate a set amount directly through the public campaign page. Stripe handles payments securely, and Octavia manages pledge collection, receipts, and donor confirmation emails automatically.

Fundraising is entirely optional — you can run a Practiceathon as a pure practice initiative with no money involved at all. But for studios that want to raise funds for new instruments, a performance trip, or any other studio goal, the full fundraising infrastructure is there when you need it.

It all works together

Practice tracking is the foundation. Everything else builds on it.

When a student logs a practice session, they automatically earn progress toward achievements. Their totals feed into the school leaderboard if they've opted in. And if you run a Practiceathon, their practice counts toward the campaign. One log, multiple rewards — all in the Family Hub, with nothing extra to configure.
